Muntjac

About
Muntjacs are small deer of the genus Muntiacus. They are significant in evolutionary studies due to their extreme chromosome variations and the discovery of new species. The Southern red muntjac has the lowest known chromosome count among mammals, with males having (diploid number of) 7 chromosomes and females 6.
Location
They are native to South Asia and Southeast Asia. However, an invasive population exists in the United Kingdom and Japan - they are non-native and have no natural predators. Therefore, densities can reach high levels with a negative impact on the environment.
