Lowland Streaked Tenrec

Yellow-black stripey lowland streaked tenrec

About

The lowland streaked tenrec is a small tenrec with an average body size of 140mm. Their average lifespan in the wild is up to 3 years. They posses a cloaca, which is a single reproductive, intestinal, and urinary opening, which is unlike most mammals (it is typically seen in birds and reptiles).

The streaked tenrec is the only mammal known to use stridulation for generating sound, which is a noise typically produced by insects, such as crickets and cicadas.

Location

It is found in tropical lowland rain forests in northern and eastern regions of Madagascar.
