4'33"

Sheet music with no notes

About

4'33" is a composition by John Cage created in 1952. It was composed for any instrument, or combination of instruments, and instructs performers not to play their instruments. It therefore involves silence for 4 minutes and 33 seconds, except for ambient sound, which is intended to contribute to the performance.

When 4'33" premiered, it caused shock and controversy, with people questioning whether it even meets the definition of music. However, Cage created 4'33" as an experiment to challenge the audience's perception of silence and demonstrate that any auditory experience can be considered music, given that absolute silence cannot exist.
