Bald Uakari

Bald uakari in a tree

About

The bald uakari is an unusual-looking monkey found in the Amazon rainforest, instantly recognizable by its bright red, hairless face. Evidence suggests this color is actually a sign of good health; the redder the face, the healthier the monkey, as it reflects a balanced diet of fruit, seeds, flowers, and insects. Their tails are shorter than usual for New World monkeys, averaging at 15cm, which is less than half their body. To sleep, uakari monkeys gather in groups of 50-200 individuals.

Sadly, deforestation and hunting have put them at risk, making conservation efforts crucial to their survival.
