Waitomo Glowworm Caves

Tour boat looking at glowworms

About

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves attraction is a cave at Waitomo, North Island of New Zealand. It is known for its population of a New Zealand exclusive glowworm species.

The glowworms are closely guarded by a Scientific Advisory Group, who monitor air quality, temperature, and humidity, and use the information to determine if/when air flow patterns should be changed and how many people are allowed to visit the caves each day.

The name "Waitomo" comes from Māori words 'wai' (water), and 'tomo' (hole/shaft).
