Hallstatt

Hallstatt is a small Austrian town, sometimes dubbed as a 'fairy tale village'. It was originally known for its production of salt, but it was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, after which it started suffering from overtourism. While tourism is important to Hallstatt's economy, the tour-bus day-visitors drive away tourists who would stay longer. In 2023, there were protests against overtourism, with fences being built to prevent tourists from stopping to take selfies, but were shortly removed after backlash.

It was rumoured to be the model for the movie Frozen's Arendelle village, which has since been refuted by the filmmakers, but nevertheless still increased day-tourist visits.
