About

Sørvágsvatn, also known as Leitisvatn, is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands. It is known for its unique optical illusion, where, from a specific viewing point, it appears as though the lake is 'floating' above the ocean. In reality, the lake is connected to the ocean via a waterfall (Bøsdalafossur), but it's still a beautiful sight!

The illusion from certain perspectives is created by the greater height of the cliffs surrounding the lake, which also prevent the lake from fully emptying into the ocean.
