Flying Fish

Fish with wings above water's surface

About

Flying fish are a family of marine ray-finned fish, and can be found in all oceans, particularly in tropical and subtropical waters. While they do not 'fly', their streamlined torpedo shape allows them to get enough underwater speed to break the surface, and then use their wing-like pectoral fins to glide for considerable distances above the water's surface.

The main reason for the behaviour is thought to be to escape from underwater predators, though staying for too long above the water's surface exposes them to attack by birds.
