Lake Hillier
About
Lake Hillier is a saline lake on the edge of Middle Island, off the coast of Western Australia. Its bubblegum-pink color is due to a combination of high salinity and the presence of certain algae that contain pink, red, or salmon-coloured pigments. What’s truly fascinating is that the lake’s pink hue remains even when the water is bottled.
In recent years, the colour has faded, partially due to high volume of rainfall diluting the salt levels. However, scientists believe change in appearance is temporary. Despite the high salt content levels, the lake is safe to swim in.
