Irrawaddy Dolphin

Two dolphins jumping out of water

About

The Irrawaddy dolphin is an endagered species of oceanic dolphin, recognisable by its rounded head and short beak. Their main natural predators are assumed to be sharks, but human-induced threats, such as bycatch, are more concerning.

Irrawaddy dolphins have a mutualistic relationship with fishermen, as they help herd fish into nets, for which they're rewarded with some of the fishers' bycatch.

Location

It is found in scattered subpopulations near sea coasts and rivers in parts of Bay of Bengal and Southeast Asia.
